Sarah Wilson is a visual artist based out of Spokane, Washington. She received her AFA at Spokane Falls Community College in 2022, where she was given the Robert Gregg Award. Her piece entitled “Chickens” was also purchased by SFCC and now resides in the Continuing Education Center. Sarah is currently working towards her BFA at Eastern Washington University and most recently, has her work shown at Terrain 14. Her work is a reflection of personal experiences trying to navigate and understand the world with both 2D and 3D experimentation.
The art I make is a deep look into my personal experiences navigating the world as a neurodivergent adult. Through making art, I can explore and articulate my thoughts and feelings in ways that feel much more natural than verbal conversation. My artistic process is very tactile, and I like to experiment with unconventionally mixed media in both my 2D and 3D works. In my 2D works, I explore a vast variety of media, from encaustic wax to digital art and everything in between. In my 3D work, I often dismantle electronics, instruments, and other found items, as well as work with more conventional sculpture materials like wire or clay. Common themes in my work are philosophy, music, health, and humor, but what connects all my work is an expression of emotion and my love for the exploration of creative procedures. I also enjoy experimentation with light and shadow, and the places that they intersect. Photographing my artwork during its process has also become part of my practice and these photos serve as a record of progress as well as separate pieces of art. This speaks to my interest in cause and effect or the how and why of how things come to be. Art is how I process the world around me.
